Trauma
Surviving a life-changing, overwhelming, and inescapable experience can make you feel trapped in the past, unable to move forward.

The event may play in your mind and you may be flooded by sensations, feelings, and pictures of what happened. This may lead to feelings of fear, anger, confusion, guilt and shame.

You may not find enjoyment in things you once did. You may avoid places and people that remind you of the event. You may feel consumed by worry it will happen again.
Alcohol, drugs, or risky behaviors may be the only way you can find to numb the feelings and stop the memories.

You want them to stop. You want to "go back to normal," or "get over it," like maybe others are saying you should be able to.

You did not cause this.
You did not deserve this.
You are not alone.
Therapy for Trauma
Trauma is an experience that strips you of your power and control. Therapy gives that back to you. You will be in the driver's seat. I will be in the car with you, sometimes making route suggestions, or noticing a sign you may not see, but you will always hold the steering wheel. We go at your pace.
Music therapy can be a place to find a sense of safety again. If you have experienced a traumatic relationship, a safe relationship with a therapist can be transformative and help you find trust in others and yourself.

Trauma stays trapped in the body and the mind. We will work to find safety for you in both. In music therapy we can explore feelings of safety, identify your inner resources and supportive relationships in your life. We can identify the feelings and thoughts present when you are feeling stuck and use music, movement, and grounding strategies to shift back to the present moment. We can also revisit what happened and reclaim and retell the story.

Whatever we do, it will be up to you. I can make suggestions and you get to decide what feels safe for you. My hope is for you to feel understood, empowered, and restored to a sense of agency in your life.
